Tokyo Police Club: Real Canadian rock-ies
By Jeremy Fogt on May. 01, 2008
Canada has had a history of cranking out some great musicians Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Feist and Rufus Wainwright are but a few. It should be no surprise then that a hard-working indie rock band from Ontario is garnering some mainstream attention. The name of the group is Tokyo Police Club and in addition to touring with Cold War Kids and performing on David Letterman, the club has released two EPs.
Tokyo Police Club’s latest effort also happens to be the group’s first LP and is entitled “Elephant Shell.” It was released on Saddle Creek Records, which is home to bands such as Bright Eyes, Cursive, and Two Gallants. There are 11 tracks with “Your English Is Good” being the lead-off single. The single is also the only song that breaks the three-minute mark while some of the other cuts barely make it over two minutes.
“Elephant Shell” is playful, but witty. There is a certain energetic quirkiness to it all. “Graves” and “Sixties Remake” are two songs that also deserve to be singles, despite their conciseness. Tokyo Police Club’s official Web site is tokyo
policeclub.com. Check it out for tour dates (they were just recently in the D.C. area) and free music. Tokyo Police Club is being watched closely by critics, and much is expected after the groundwork laid with the release of “Elephant Shell.”
