Sweet Briar College’s dean will take the stage this weekend for the 2008-09 Janet Lowrey Gager Community Concert Series, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday in the college’s Memorial Chapel.
Jonathan Green, a baritone, will sing “Five,” a set of songs based on the poetry of e.e. cummings. He composed the five-song set - based on the final grouping of poems in the poet’s book “Is 5” - as an undergraduate student.
“I thought it might be informative for our students to hear an example of student work from the faculty,” he said in a press release.
“I chose the poems because they have a piquancy of melancholy and a lot of music in them.”
The diverse program also includes performances by pianist Anna Billias, accompanist for Sweet Briar’s choirs, and HarpSong of the Blue Ridge, an ensemble made up of harpists ages 10 to 50.
Marcia Thom, a soprano and Sweet Briar voice instructor will sing several jazz pieces, and Ellen Hickson, a mezzo-soprano from Lynchburg, will sing Brahms’ “Rhapsody,” both accompanied by Sweet Briar music professor Rebecca McCord.
The Gager series is performed in memory of Janet Gager, who served as Sweet Briar’s director of public relations. Future events are scheduled for noon Nov. 11 and Feb. 10 and 3 p.m. April 19, 2009.
Admission is free. For more information, call (434) 381-6115.
