Redux: American Idol’s Mariah Carey night
By Casey Gillis on Apr. 17, 2008
Tuesday was Mariah Carey night on “American Idol” and the guys completely dominated the show, offering new and interesting takes on some of her biggest hits.
No sooner than I said I hoped someone would sing “Always Be My Baby,” my favorite Carey song, than the camera cut to the songstress herself, saying she was surprised David Cook chose it.
What a risk, and what an incredible result.
He rocked it and cemented his place as the frontrunner of this competition. I will go see this man in concert, anywhere, anytime.
Paula’s one coherent thought of the night — that David’s version could easily be on a movie soundtrack — was right on. I could completely see it on the soundtrack to Zach Braff’s next movie.
My other Idol boyfriend, Jason Castro, was also fantastic. He sang “I Don’t Want to Cry,” a song I’d never heard before.
Suddenly it seemed like Randy was the judge on something (you can usually say that about Ms. Abdul) for criticizing it. But we all know whose opinion really matters most: Simon. And he loved it.
It was Jason’s second best performance so far. The first was “Hallelujah” early on in the competition. That episode, which also featured David Cook’s take on Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello,” is permanently saved on my DVR.
David Archuleta was good, too. But, to be honest, his shine is wearing off on me. There’s something about him that is starting to creep me out. He’s too perfect. He might be a robot.
None of the girls’ performances really struck me, so I was glad to see Kristy Lee Cook go home Wednesday night.
I really can’t remember enjoying a season of “Idol” this much. Idol Tour, here I come!
