One week, five shows

By Casey Gillis on Jan. 18, 2008

By Nanci Dodson, The Burg

Get ready for Lynchburg to rule. Five big shows are happening this week, three of which are hosting national acts.

Saturday, Jan. 19, Faith Evangelical is having Steal the Prize and The Poison Written, with This Chosen Decision, Nilah and Since 1913. The show begins at 6:30 p.m.

Three of the bands are metal, while STP and Since 1913 offer straight-up rock ’n’ roll, flirting with inspiration from bands like Radiohead and The Mars Volta. The show’s just $4, and will deliver something for more than just metal rockers.

Later Saturday night, The Drowsy Poet is having alternative rock band, Sabotage Manual of Roanoke, in to perform with Madrone. The show starts at 9 p.m., and costs $5 at the door.

Monday, Jan. 21, is what I’m going to adorn with the title “Biggest Lynchburg Metal Show Ever.” Another band’s even been added to the line-up without raising the price of the show. Oh, Sleeper, Eyes Set to Kill, Burden of a Day, Dead and Divine, Kenotia, The Poison Written and Reapers are the Angels will be at Living Word for $7. The headbanging begins at 6:30 p.m.

Living Word’s not stopping there. On Jan. 22, A Plea for Purging, Once Nothing, Here I Come Falling, Ready the Way and A Breath of Plagues are playing at 6:30 for $7.

Finally, Jan. 23, Illinois band Dear Future is making a tour stop in Lynchburg at 6 p.m. at the Mezzanine Café for $5. Joining them on tour are The Marquette Weekend and Dear Dear. The Mezzanine is a spacious coffeeshop/venue downtown, with tons of art work and photography on display. And, unlike the aforementioned shows, no metal music will be heard.

Going to all of these shows would cost you $26. All the entertainment of road-tripping it to Richmond or Norfolk, without the drive. Way to go, Lynchburg.
Now prepare to rock out.

Faith Evangelical is on Wards Road, across from Lynchburg airport. The Drowsy Poet is located at 3700 Candlers Mountain Road. Living Word is at 4130 Waterlick Road, and The Mezzanine is on 720 Commerce St.

Dodson is a local journalism student.
