On the Road: Spirits are lifted by great audiences

By Jon Busdeker on Jun. 29, 2007

On Thursday (June 28) I woke up in a Pennsylvania lake house with the most beautiful waterfront view. On a tour like this, we have a very limited budget for lodging, so we crash where we can. Occasionally we get lucky and have friends in the area with very nice accommodations. The show in Scranton, Pa., that night was fairly dismal - the drive across I-80 was even worse as we drove through major construction and a heavy downpour. However, we always make the best of these situations and when we arrived at the lake house after the show in Scranton, we began another impromptu jam session that ran late into the night. There was even a hot tub and a healthy supply of Yuengling (one of Pennsylvania’s best known beers made by America’s oldest brewery).
Being on this tour has increased my appreciation for this country and its people. Every state has a somewhat different culture and everywhere we’ve gone we’ve met great, down-to-earth people, most of whom I will never see again. It’s a very mind-expanding, spiritual experience to realize how many people (great people) there really are and how many I will never know.
Coming into the small city of Williamsport, Pa., tonight, we weren’t sure what to expect, especially since Scranton had been such a downer. I had played in Williamsport last year on tour, but at a different venue. When we arrived, however, we found an article about us in the local paper and when we showed up at the venue, it was packed. This small city had one of the most incredible audiences. The energy was amazing and we really needed this type of show to lift our spirits. Friday we are off for Trenton, N.J., at a venue that recently had a shooting nearby with bullets that penetrated the walls of the venue itself.
Coming up will be several acoustic shows and our only day off (which is much needed) will be July 2.
