Music notes: Hootie, Blowfish part ways

Bye-bye, Hootie. Or so says frontman Darius Rucker. Rucker has announced that because his solo career in country is flourishing, Hootie and the Blowfish is more or less kaput except for a handful of charity shows each year. Rucker told AOL the band won’t do any recording or touring until he’s released three or four country albums.
John Lennon’s life story, “Nowhere Boy,” is on track for a major movie. The film, directed by Sam Taylor-Wood, will focus on Lennon’s childhood. Casting is currently under way.
The remaining Grateful Dead crew - guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann - are planning a tour in April and May. The group is also preparing its second “Deadheads for Obama” concert, in Pennsylvania next month.

“Gossip Girl” gets a companion soundtrack with the release of “OMFGG Original Music Featured On Gossip Girl No. 1.” The album features the Republic Tigers, Phantom Planet, the Kills and the Ting Tings. The soundtrack is available at digital outlets now, and will arrive in physical form Oct. 28.
The Smiths have another “best of” collection coming this fall -”Hang the DJ: The Very Best of the Smiths,” is due Oct. 7.
The first new Queen album since 1995 -and the first since Paul Rodgers joined as lead singer arrives Oct. 28. It’s titled “The Cosmos Rocks.”
Scott Weiland’s second solo album, “Happy,” will be released Nov. 18. . . . Coldplay expects to release a new EP by year’s end that compiles leftover material from the “Viva La Vida” sessions.
