Monacans set to celebrate

The Monacan Indian Nations will once again gather in Amherst County for the 15th annual Monacan Powwow.
This weekend’s events will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday on Albert Farm, located at 2550 Elon Road, six miles west of U.S. 29 in Elon.
There will also be a bluegrass concert at the site beginning at 6 p.m. Friday featuring Bobby Jennings & Friends, Mended Ways and Hand Picked Grass. The cost is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
Events on Saturday and Sunday will include demonstrations, an arts and crafts sale and dancing.
There will be traditional dancing, singing and drumming as Native dancers from all over the country join to celebrate their cultures. A special exhibition of Aztec dancing will be presented on both days by the Salinas family of Mexico.
There will also be a wide selection of Native foods available as well as educational exhibits, native artists and craftspeople from across the country. All items will be available for sale. At dusk on Saturday night, there will be a special bonfire dance.
There will also be a wide variety of live animals on hand, such as the American buffalo, eagles, hawks, falcons and owls, along with wildlife rehabilitation expert Earl Scriver.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and children 12 and under, and free for ages 5 and under.
Events will go on rain or shine. Lawnchairs welcome; no drugs, alcohol or pets permitted.
