Local artist shows elsewhere

By Jon Busdeker on Jun. 14, 2007

Michael Mewborn recently took on an artistic challenge. The Lynchburg artist has two shows occurring simultaneously, one at the Broome Street Gallery in the Soho District of New York City, N.Y., and the other at the Semans Gallery of the Durham, N.C., Arts Council.
“I had no idea how stressful it would be to prepare for two shows at once,” said Mewborn in a news release, “but I just couldn’t turn down either one. Each venue is a tremendous opportunity — I had to say yes to both invitations.”
The New York show, titled “Geo-centric,” features 16 of Mewborn’s paintings along with a few works by Brazilian artists. The show is predominately an exhibition of geometrically-based art, Mewborn’s specialty. Works will be on display through June 17, at 498 Broome St., in New York City.
“My work is very complex, and normally each piece takes a month or more to complete,” Mewborn said. “I found myself having to complete a piece a week for a while to get what we wanted.”
The one-person Durham show is part of the Durham Arts Council Exhibit Program and features 20 of Mewborn’s most recent works. The show, titled “Recent Works,” will run through July 29 in the gallery, located at 120 Morris St. in Durham.
Mewborn personally transported and hung the Durham show.
Since his return to the art world after a 30 year hiatus, Mewborn has had shows of his work in Richmond at ADA Gallery and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg. He has also been included in shows at The Prizery in South Boston and Nelson Fine Arts Gallery in Lexington.
Mewborn is represented locally by Riverviews Artists’ Gallery. His work can be seen in his studio on First Fridays or at http://www.michaelmewbornart.com.
