From staff reports
Lynchburg College will host a German Film Festival next week.
The festival, which runs from Oct. 22-25, will feature four films, a lecture and a music recital.
“I wanted to do something cultural for the German community here. There are quite a few Germans here … and also people who like German culture,” says German professor Georg Schwarzmann, who organized the event and hopes to make it an annual one.
Events kick off at 7 p.m. Oct. 22, when LC history professor Brian Crim introduces the first film, “The Murderers among Us,” which will be shown with English subtitles.
All films will be shown in Hopwood Auditorium and will be preceded by an introduction and followed by a brief analysis.
Schwarzmann says he chose films that portray events from World War II.
“All the movies, they basically admit guilt,” he says. “It’s trying to come to terms with what happened in the war. The trauma, the destruction, the chaos.”
The rest of the schedule is as follows:
—Art professor Delane Karalow will present the lecture “‘Degenerate Art’ in Nazi Germany” at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in room 204 of the Dillard Fine Arts Center. A reception with German refreshments will follow.
“Certain art was banned under Hitler (during the war),” says Schwarzmann. “It was the same thing as burning books. It was mainly Jews who were on that list.”
—“The Last Bridge,” a 1954 film, will be shown at 7 p.m. Oct. 23.
—Soprano Jessica Burkey will give a recital of “Lieder” at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24 in Sydnor Performance Hall. She’ll be accompanied by Robert White on piano and LC students Emily Turner on clarinet and Francis Longaker on piano.
—The film “In Those Days” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24.
—A presentation called “Germans Remember WWII” is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 25 in the college’s Alumni Lounge.
