Interpol builds on solid musical foundation
By Jon Busdeker on Aug. 06, 2007
Interpol is an indie rock band that began in 1998. Since Interpol’s inception, the four-piece has consistently released critically acclaimed and, more recently, commercially successful music.
Interpol came out of the New York music scene and has been compared with other New York-based groups like the Strokes. Influences range from Joy Division to the Chameleons to Kitchens of Distinction.
Interpol’s third studio album is “Our Love to Admire” and was recorded shortly after Interpol left Matador Records to sign with the major label Capitol Records. Prior to releasing the album, Interpol toured with the new material to gauge fans’ reactions in Europe, Canada and the U.S.
“Our Love to Admire” is a change of pace for the band and includes several keyboard arrangements. It is the group’s first album recorded in New York City.
The new record includes 11 tracks with singles “The Heinrich Maneuver” and “Mammoth.” The opening song, “Pioneer to the Falls,” is a classic Interpol track and it is quite endearing.
Other stand-out tracks include “Rest My Chemistry” and “The Lighthouse.”
It would be nice to hear Interpol stretch out even more and try a few riskier arrangements, but as it stands the band has constructed a great album and continues to build upon the solid musical foundation it has built for itself.
