Have excuses ready for uninvited neighbors
By Jon Busdeker on Jul. 05, 2007
Dear Emily: My wife and I invited some friends over for a barbecue awhile back, including our new neighbors. When they came over to our house they were extremely obnoxious, told crude and inappropriate jokes and stayed later than any of our other guests, despite our constant hints that my wife and I were tired and ready to call it a night. We are having another party in a week and do not want them here. What do we do if they show up uninvited?
— Crude Crashers
Dear Crude Crashers: Start by trying not to bring the party to their attention. Perhaps if the get-together was held inside, they wouldn’t even be aware that it is going on.
But if it is an outdoor barbecue you’re planning, have excuses ready if and when they show up to the door. Tell them you’re hosting a business party and only work people were invited. Or, along the same lines, tell them you are throwing a party for a friend, who gave you a specific guest list, so now is not the best time for them to socialize.
Or, if you want to permanently keep the crashers from coming, tell the truth and explain that their “sense of humor” wasn’t really appreciated, and you would rather keep the party private.
