Great Dates: Part 2

By Jon Busdeker on Jul. 12, 2007

Last weekend, you asked for her number. You didn’t think you had a chance with the beautiful blond at the other side of the bar.
But when you asked for it, she got out a pen, jotted down her number and smiled.
You didn’t call the next day, or the next, or the next.
You waited for Wednesday night and dialed: (434) 867-5309.
“Uh yeah, is this Jenny?”
The voice on the other line said yes. You proceed to ask her out on a date for Thursday night.
That might have seemed hard, but now you have to think of something to do in Lynchburg to impress the lucky lady.
You could take her to the most expensive restaurant in town, buy her a dozen roses and take her to a play. But who has that kind of money?
Instead, be creative, be careful and show your date a great time.

Thursday
It’s a first date, so do the standard: dinner and a funny movie.  It may sound unimaginative, but if you get too fancy, too soon, she might think you’re weird.
If it’s a first date, you want to be able to talk with your date. Pick a location that’s not loud.
Try Thai ’99. The restaurant, located on Memorial Avenue, is quiet and the food is not the typical hamburgers and steaks.
If you’ve never had Thai food, ask the servers for a suggestion for you and your date.
After dinner and dessert (order the green tea ice cream), a funny movie is a great choice.  Don’t take your date to the dollar show on the first date, it’s tacky.

Friday
Before going out, see if your date wants to come by and have dinner.  Make something that is impossible to mess up like tacos or spaghetti.
Even if somehow you screw up dinner, she’ll be happy you gave an effort.
After the meal, take your date to First Fridays. The free event in downtown Lynchburg will show off your artistic side to your date.
Walk around Riverviews Art Space and comment on how you like the difference pieces of art. Even if you know nothing about art, she’ll be amazed.
As the sun begins to set on downtown Lynchburg, take a leisurely walk around the historic city.
Then, stop by the Bull Branch for a drink. If it is a normal night at the Bull Branch, it will be so crowded you’ll have to stand two inches from your date and talk into her ear.

Saturday
The night dates are great, but instead of acting like a vampire, show her a good time during the day.
Day dates can be awkward, but they can be unforgettable.
Pick her up around 1 p.m.. But don’t drive.  Ask if she wants to go for a bike ride around the city.
Hop on to the James River Heritage Trail System and show her a different part of Lynchburg.  Take her under the Hollins Mill Tunnel, over to Percival’s Island and by the Kemper Street train station.
Then, when you go by the Hollins Dam, stop your bike and take the picnic lunch out of your backpack.  Women love picnics.  Make sure you pack stuff that won’t go bad or else the picnic is ruined.
When you’re finished with lunch, hope back on your bike and ride to get an ice cream cone.

Sunday
It’s been great weekend. Your date has been calling her friends to brag about you.  You’re so in.
This is going to top off the entire weekend.
Ask her to breakfast. No one takes anyone out for breakfast on a date.  She’ll be amazed.
Take her to a down-home type place like Country Kitchen on Lakeside Drive. They have biscuits and gravy, omelets, pancakes and tons of other breakfast items.  The menu will remind her of grandma’s kitchen.
Over a few cups of coffee, tell her you have a surprise.
After you pay for the bill, drive to Riverside Park and take her for a walk.  (This works better if she’s never been to the park).  Take her to the trail that overlooks the James River.
As you’re walking along, there is a bench near a big rock.  Take a seat and let her take in the beautiful view of the river.
Let her know how much fun you had this weekend and how you want to see her again.
It’s the perfect ending to the perfect weekend.
