Get professional advice to aid fears

By Jon Busdeker on Jul. 12, 2007

Dear Emily: My wife and I have been trying to get pregnant for about seven months with no luck. “Felicia” has been getting really depressed and I’m not sure what to do to cheer her up. I try to be positive, but she insists that we will never be able to have kids, even though there is no medical reason for her to believe this. How do I convince her not to give up so easily?
— Too Soon to Give Up

Dear Too Soon to Give Up: For starters, seven months isn’t all that long when trying to conceive. Many doctors say it takes an average of four months to get pregnant, but to wait at least a year before exploring options to help the process along.
Perhaps your wife isn’t aware of the time it takes, or perhaps there are different techniques she doesn’t know about that could increase your chances.
So if your encouragement is not enough, get Felicia to make an appointment with her doctor to get the facts and get back on the baby track. A medical professional may be able to give her the knowledge she needs to raise her spirits.
