First Fridays round-up for April

By Casey Gillis on Mar. 31, 2010

(434) 385-5525

April looks to be a busy month in the art world. Here’s what local galleries have in store for First Fridays this week:

The Academy of Fine Arts, 600 Main St.
The work of 37 artists from 17 states will be on display in the Academy and Up Front galleries for the Annual National Juried Art Exhibition, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Cash prizes for the show total more than $3,000. Juror Kathleen Edwards, chief curator at the University of Iowa Museum of Art, will give a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m., to be followed by the presentation of awards.

Avenue Arts Studio Gallery, 1206 Rivermont Ave.
Owner Kelly Mattox will show her own monotypes, oil pastels and Yupo designs in “Works on Paper,” with a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Artifacts, 4327 Boonsboro Road
The gallery will display the work of local artists, including featured artist Rodney Laughon, with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

Dancing Leaf Gallery, 409 Fifth St.
The work of Timothy Thomas, who layers clay on the canvas of his contemporary paintings, and Darlene Graves, who makes fantasy masks and Raku pottery, will be on display during a reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

Dance Theatre of Lynchburg, 722 Commerce St.
Dance Theatre is hosting a performance by members of the Charlottesville Ballet from 5 to 8 p.m.

Legacy Museum of African American History, 403 Monroe St.
The museum will be open from 5 to 8 p.m., showing its current exhibit, “Much in Demand: 200 Years of Central Virginia African Americans in the Military.”

Light Wings, 849 Belmont St.
Jon Roark, an artist and teacher at Heritage High School, will exhibit his work, along with that of his students, in a variety of mediums and styles. The First Fridays reception runs from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Lodge of the Fisherman, 4415 Boonsboro Rd.
The pastel chalk work of Sarah Raessler will be on display in an exhibit called “lively expressions of color and joy,” with a reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The Lynchburg native finds inspiration from looking at her friends’ paintings and visits to art galleries, especially the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and Georgia O’Keeffe’s home in New Mexico.

The Lynchburg Art Club, 1011 Rivermont Ave.
“Watercolors” is an exhibit featuring the work of Peggy Dillon, who says she loves the delicate qualities and playfulness of the medium; Sara Saunders, whose work largely focuses on older architecture in Lynchburg, including houses found on side streets downtown; and Victoria Whorley, who grew up with a love for animals, flowers and landscapes — all the things she loves to paint.

The First Fridays reception is from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and the opening reception is from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Lynchburg Museum, 901 Court St.
The museum will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. Rachel Deddens will give a talk about the featured topic, “Lynchburg Women in World War II.”

Rivermont Studio, 1204 Rivermont Ave.
The work of Mary Jane Oliver Hubbard and David Camden will be on display, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and a Conversations with the Artists talk at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Much of Hubbard’s work are kinesthetic studies that focus on the effects of currents. She’s also interested in detailed renditions of natural objects, like feathers and shells.

Camden is a ceramic artist who will be showing his raku vessels. Raku is a style of ceramic glazing characterized by a cracked surface.

Riverviews Artspace, 901 Jefferson St.
The Craddock-Terry Gallery’s “Visions of History” will feature the work of Michael Wong, who traveled from Minnesota to install an exhibition designed specifically for the space. It focuses on history and contemporary events that he chooses to comment on with his own versions of political cartoons.

Elsewhere, the Coop Gallery will display the work of featured artist David Eakin, who works in watercolor and oil and is a fixture of the Lynchburg art scene, while the Jefferson Lobby Gallery presents “local.vibrant.lynchburg,” a special collection from Lynchburg photographers.

The Urban Art Bazaar will also be open on the lower level.

All events run from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Thomas A. Johnson Furniture Company/James River Furnishings Gallery, Parlor Lofts on Main St.
The company will hold a silent auction and display new items in their collection from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Parlor Lofts gallery space
