First Friday listings

By Liz Barry on Nov. 05, 2008

Local glass artist Jon Baker will heat up First Fridays with a live glass-blowing demonstration.

It’s scheduled to take place during a dessert reception from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Beeswax Candle Co. on 109 13th St.

Baker’s demonstration will provide a glimpse into how the self-taught artist creates his signature glass jewelry, which will be on display at the gallery. His nature-inspired work has been featured throughout the U.S. and overseas in places like Paris, Norway and Singapore.

On Rivermont Avenue, The Lynchburg Art Club’s new show, “Far and Near,” features art by Mark D. Johnson, Patricia Lease and Sandra Whitehead.

Lease is a Pennsylvania native whose oil paintings are inspired by the Virginia landscape and places where she has traveled.

“I try to capture that moment in time that inspires me to paint a particular scene,” she says in her bio.

Johnson is a self-taught artist with a passion for capturing the contemporary landscape through his oil paintings. The New York native is a Web designer and programmer for Liberty University.

Whitehead, a Lynchburg native, will present scenes in watercolor and oil.
