Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is having its first-ever Latino Film Festival, which runs Oct. 23 through Oct. 25.
The festival will feature films and short documentaries aimed at promoting awareness of Hispanic issues and culture.
The showings are free and open to the public. There will be discussion, in English and Spanish, and light refreshments after each showing.  The films are:
“El Norte.” Teenage siblings Enrique and Rosa flee Guatemala for the United States in the 1980s to escape ethnic and political persecution. The film follows their journey to the north and new life as illegal immigrants in California. (Spanish with English subtitles)
Show time: three one-hour segments at 12 p.m. on Oct. 23, 24 and 25 in Amherst Hall, room 2123.
“Dying to Live.” A documentary exploring the human face of immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border. The film focuses on why people leave their native homes and what they face on their journey. (English)
Show time: 7 p.m., Oct. 23, in Merritt Hall, room 5145.
“The Life and Death of Frida Kahlo.” This 40-minute documentary on Mexican painter Frida Kahlo includes scenes from the artist’s 1959 funeral and interviews with people who knew her well. Kahlo was married to painter Diego Rivera and is one of Mexico’s most celebrated artists. (English)
Show time: 7 p.m., Oct. 24, in Merritt Hall, room 5149.
“Mayans: Apocalypse Then.” A 26-minute documentary that examines the remnants of the ancient Mayan cities of Tikal, Copan and Uxmal, and attempts to determine what caused the collapse of one of the world’s greatest civilizations. (English)
Show time: 7 p.m., Oct. 25, in Merritt Hall, room 5146.
The film festival is sponsored by CVCC, the Hispanic Alliance of Lynchburg, the CVCC Spanish Club, the CVCC Cultural and International Events Committee and the Virginia Musuem of Fine Arts.  For more information on the festival, call 832-7662 or 309-1225. J
