From staff reports
Blues Hall of Famer Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers will headline the 10th annual Sedalia Blues Festival on Saturday.
Thackery, who honed his skills backing Muddy Waters and as a co-founder of the Nighthawks, will close the all-day show, which opens at 1 p.m. at the Sedalia Center off Virginia 122.
After leaving the Nighthawks two decades ago, Thackery became a road warrior, first with his new band, R&B funksters the Assassins, and then with his current crew, the Drivers. The result of the musician/songwriter’s post-Nighthawk years is 19 CDs and counting.
The festival’s music begins at 1 p.m. with a blues competition. The winner will go on to play at the International Blues Challenge, which is held every year in Memphis, according to a statement from the Sedalia Center.
After the competition, the Rev. Billy C. Wirtz, a renowned humorist, will deliver the message in blues boogie-woogie.
Festival-goers can bring lawn chairs to sit outside the pavilion and watch the show via large-screen monitor. No coolers or pets will be allowed.
Admission is $12 in advance and $15 at the gate. Camping will be available as space permits for $15 per night with electrical hookup or $10 without.
