Emmy nominations announced

By Casey Gillis on Jul. 19, 2007

The nominations for the 59th Annual Emmy Awards came out this morning, and they’re not as bad as they usually are.

I’m still going to bemoan the fact that quality shows like “Friday Night Lights,“ “Veronica Mars,“ “Gilmore Girls” and “Scrubs” weren’t recognized, but the voters actually got a few things right this year — namely singling out actors like Kevin Dillon, Neil Patrick Harris and Rainn Wilson in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy category; Jenna Fischer and Vanessa Williams in Supporting Actress in a Comedy; and T.R. Knight, Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn in Supporting Actor in a Drama.

All are fabulous actors who deserved the recognition.

Dillon is always hysterically pathetic as Johnny Drama on “Entourage;“ Harris can nail a one-liner like no one else as “How I Met Your Mother’s” Barney; and Wilson is delightfully nuts as Dwight on “The Office.“ I don’t even know who to root for in this category because I like them all so much!

Fischer just got better and better as “The Office’s” Pam this season, especially when she grew a backbone and finally confronted Jim about their strained friendship. That scene alone should give her the win. As for Williams, I love to hate her as the evil Wilhelmina on “Ugly Betty.“ I only wish her sidekick Marc, played by Michael Urie, had also been nominated.

Knight makes me love George more than any of the McDreamys, McSteamys and McWhoevers on “Grey’s Anatomy.“ Over at “Lost,“ O’Quinn was great this year as John Locke confronted his father and went a little cuckoo, and Emerson scares the beejesus out of me as Ben. I’ve been calling for his nomination since last year.

I think the theme of this year’s Emmy’s should be baby steps.

The voters finally wised up enough to nominate all the fabulous people I just mentioned above.

Hopefully, they’ll continue the trend next year and recognize my man John Krasinski on “The Office” and some of the fabulous actors on “Friday Night Lights,“ like Kyle Chandler and Lynchburg’s own Connie Britton. It’s a travesty that they were overlooked but, hey, I’ll take what I can get. There’s always next year!
