Defending the Dog

Dear Emily: My 75-year-old mother has a very old, and very sick, dog. I keep telling her it is cruel to keep him alive, but she just won’t take him to the vet and put him to sleep. I don’t want to force her to do something she isn’t ready to do, but my heart breaks for the dog, as his suffering only seems to get worse.

Dear Defending the Dog: You need to get to the vet and let a doctor tell her what is best. Hearing the news from a professional may help your mom accept that it is the right choice to make.
But if your mom still won’t go through with it, at least get the vet to prescribe some pain pills to help the pooch be more comfortable.
Also, consider why your mom isn’t ready to part with her furry friend. Not being a young pup herself, your mom could be having issues about death and losing loved ones.
Try to get her to open up and see what is really behind her decision.
