CW cancels Veronica Mars
By Casey Gillis on May. 17, 2007
The CW has one angry couch potato on its hands.
They cancelled “Veronica Mars.“
Shows that did get renewals include “One Tree Hill” and that stupid “Search for the Next Doll” show.
They also announced plans for two new midseason reality shows: “Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants,“ in which mother/daughter teams compete against one another in a beauty pageant, and “Farmer Wants a Wife,“ which basically sounds like a “Green Acres”-ish version of “The Bachelor.“
Really? Are they really bringing giving us this dreck instead of “Veronica?“ Ugh.
TV won’t be the same without Veronica and her quick-witted gang: devoted dad Keith, bad boy boyfriend Logan and best pals Wallace and Mac.
My Tuesday nights won’t be the same.
Bad decision, CW. Bad decision.
I guess we can’t be surprised though.
These are the same geniuses who cancelled the charming, wonderful “Everwood” last season in favor of an 11th and entirely unnecessary season of “7th Heaven” and new series “Runaway,“ which lasted all of, I don’t know, three episodes.
That sure worked for them, didn’t it?
I’d love to be bold and call for a boycott of the network. But its trailing so far behind the other four networks in ratings that it would be just cruel.
Plus, in one very small - and I do mean small - ray of light, execs did renew “Smallville” and the ratings-challenged “Supernatural,“ two shows that I adore.
While I don’t encourage you to watch either of them, “One Tree Hill” and “Search for the Next Doll” will both return at midseason.
Other returning series include “Everybody Hates Chris,“ “Girlfriends,“ “The Game,“ “Beauty and the Geek,“ “America’s Next Top Model” and “Friday Night Smackdown.“
The network has also added two reality/newsmagazine shows: “CW Now,“ a blend of news and entertainment, and “Online Nation,“ a review of what’s popular online from week to week.
New scripted series include:
Aliens in America (8:30 p.m. Mondays)
A small-town family - mom Franny and dad Gary, their two kids, the popular Claire and awkward Justin - hosts a Muslim exchange student from Pakistan. Raja, the exchange student, immediately bonds with Justin, and the two set out to navigate the perils of high school together.
Reaper (9 p.m. Tuesdays)
In this dark comedy, Bret Harrison plays a slacker who, on his 21st birthday, finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil before he was born. Now, he has to serve as Satan’s bounty hunter
Gossip Girl (9 p.m. Wednesdays)
Based on a series of young-adult novels of the same name, this teen sudser follows privileged prep schoolers living in Manhattan. The story is narrated by a never-seen blogger, voiced by “Veronica Mars” herself, Kristen Bell. Hey, at least the CW is keeping her employed. The show was created by “O.C.“ creator/producer Josh Schwartz.
Life is Wild (8 p.m. Sundays)
A veterinarian moves his wife and four kids from their cushy life in New York City to a South African game reserve.
