Cheers for Friday

Friday Cheers is celebrating its sweet 16 this year.
“It’s amazing,” says Chris McCune, events manager at Lynch’s Landing, which organizes Lynchburg’s Friday Cheers. “I can’t believe 16 years have already gone by.”
The first event of 2008, featuring the Caribbean tunes of Key West, is scheduled from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at Riverfront Festival Park. In a change from years past, the first six Friday Cheers events will be held on the riverfront, before the city begins construction on a permanent stage there. The area won’t be available during construction, so the final five will be at the Community Market. Admission is $5.
Usually, the first and last events, and one or two in between, were held on the riverfront, and the rest were at the market.
McCune says they’re hoping to hold all Friday Cheers events on the riverfront next year to take advantage of the new stage.
“We’ll be able to get bigger bands next year and (create) more excitement,” he says.
The rest of the schedule is as follows:
—May 30: Burning Bridges, party music
—June 6: B2B, Jimmy Buffett tunes
—June 13: Cimmaron, southern rock
—June 20: The Brothership, soul, R&B and funk
—June 27: The Worx
—July 18: Radio Cult, ’80s night
—July 25: TFC, Motown and R&B
—Aug. 1: The House Band, ’70s night
—Aug. 8: The Dickens, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s
—Aug. 29: Hotel California, Eagles Tribute Band
