REVIEWER RATING: 4 out of 5
The Kooks are a rock band from England that rose to fame with the release of their first hit song, “Naïve.” After the song’s release, The Kooks’ debut album remained in the Top 20 for over half a year and has gained triple platinum status. The group was awarded Best UK and Ireland Act in 2006 and were nominated for both a BRIT Award and a Q Award (for Best New Act).
The Kooks’ sophomore record is entitled “Konk” and the first single, “Always Where I Need to Be,” is scurrying up the charts. It has already reached No. 3 in the UK. It was produced by Tony Hoffer who has worked with such acts as Beck, Belle & Sebastia, The Fratellis, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Sondre Lerche. While The Kooks play it safe on this record, it is by no means a sophomore slump; “Konk” merely continues making use of the sonic landscapes found on the group’s first album.
There are 13 tracks in total, including a hidden track at the end. Stand-out tracks include “Love It All” and “Shine On.” A special double disc edition will be released that includes seven brand new songs. If The Kooks keep at it, they may very well make a career out of pop music. For more information, check out the website at http://www.thekooks.co.uk.
