Three days of music

By Liz Barry on Apr. 10, 2008

Feast or Flower, a new musical festival in Lynchburg, will celebrate spring with three days of jazz and classical music April 11 to 13.

Two professional musicians, Christi Salisbury of Lynchburg and Ben Noyes of Roanoke, conceived the festival. Both are conservatory graduates and recent transplants to the area.

“Our ultimate goal is to bring exceptional music to Lynchburg and place it in a setting that is fresh,” said Salisbury, a violinist.

Part of the festival’s mission is to dispel the stereotype that classical music is stuffy or highbrow, Salisbury said. Instead of a traditional concert hall, the performances will take place at venues like the Craddock-Terry Gallery at Riverviews Artspace and Vines on Rivermont Avenue.

“We want to bring people of all ages to these concerts,” Salisbury said. “Generally the classical music audience is aging because the arts are not always emphasized at younger age.”

The festival kicks off on April 11 at Riverviews Artspace with a classical music concert by Noyes, a cellist, and Stephen Miahky, a violinist and faculty member at Cornell University. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.; hors d’ouevres and wine will be served.

April 12 begins with artist master classes at Randolph College’s Presser Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Noyes, Miahky and pianist Tomo Matsuo will coach Lynchburg area students as they play for an audience.

The festivities at Presser Hall will resume at 7:30 that evening with a classical music concert by Noyes, Miahky and Matsuo on a stage decorated with flowers.

Jazz music will round out the festival on April 13. At 4 p.m., guitarist Justin Craig and bassist Bobby McCullough will join forces for a concert at Vines on Rivermont, complemented by food and wine.

Tickets are being sold at T. Martin & Son, Violins and Bows Inc. on 712 12th St., The White Hart on Main Street, and Givens Book on Lakeside Drive. Prices vary. For more information, call Christi Salisbury at (434) 386-1885.
