Bluegrass concert at SBC to benefit Habitat for Humanity

By Mark Bailey on Jan. 03, 2008

From staff reports

This year will make the fifth in which musicians gather for a concert that showcases the area’s new and its tried-and-true in bluegrass.
This year’s concert — called “Always (and Ever) Working on a Building” because it benefits Amherst County Habitat for Humanity — is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at Sweet Briar College.
As of Wednesday, there were still some tickets left for the show, which usually sells out.
The concert will feature relatively young groups, such as Hard Drivin’ Grass, teenagers who took first place among bluegrass bands at the Virginia Folk Music Association convention in 2007, and the Deer Creek Boys, college-age players who won first place for best bluegrass bands at the 2007 Old Fiddler’s Convention in Galax.
With the new players come seasoned performers, such as the Rockbridge Pickers with guests the Daughters of Moses, the Little Mountain Boys, Reed Creek and Handpicked Grass. Daughters of Moses, meanwhile, has its youthful element in the granddaughters of veteran player Marshall Mays.
Some of the groups have a gospel flavor, such as Dobie Toms and Faithridge. Long Mountain Grass and James River Cut Ups bring even more experience to the table.
The show will start with performances by students fiddlers, “Bobby and Friends,” and student flat footers.
As in years past, Bob Langstaff of WAMV will emcee.
Concert sponsors are the Sweet Briar College Chaplain’s Office and the college’s Habitat for Humanity chapter.
