Ask Emily - Come clean to friend

By Mark Bailey on Apr. 18, 2008

Dear Emily: I went to a party last weekend and kind of hooked up with my friend “Kelly’s” boyfriend. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but “John” and I were both drinking a little too much, and we were dancing and having a good time when we kissed each other. I think John is cute and a nice guy, and if he weren’t dating my friend I would certainly be interested in dating him. But the way things are now, I know nothing (else) would happen between us. So should I tell my friend what happened, or is it better that she never knows?
— Feeling guilty

Dear Feeling guilty: You haven’t been much of a friend to Kelly recently, so I suggest you come clean and start being a good friend now. Even though you (hopefully) learned your lesson and wouldn’t let anything happen again between you and John, you have no idea what is going on in John’s mind, or if he has learned a lesson as well. Kelly has a right to know what John did and that he can’t be trusted. Sure, you run the risk of losing Kelly as a friend, but she has a right to know what kind of guy she is dating. And being honest with her is the least you can do.

Dear Emily: My best friend loves to play poker online, and I’ve noticed she’s been chatting a lot with the other players lately. She even flirts with some of the guys, and I’m worried that she may be getting too involved with these people she hardly even knows. Emily, am I being silly, or do I have a reason to be concerned?
— Betting on romance

Dear Betting on romance: Start worrying if and when your friend decides to meet up with poker_hottie4U alone, or is sending “him” money in the mail because he really needs it and, after all, they are good friends. Otherwise, if she is an adult, let her have her fun. As long as she uses certain precautions, like keeping personal information personal and not agreeing to meet someone alone, a little chat room flirting can be fun and harmless.
Dear Emily: Everyone around me keeps talking about buying organic food, but the prices seem very high on certain fruits and vegetables. Is there really a benefit in eating these foods, or is this just the newest craze that will soon pass?
— Fussy over food

Dear Fussy over food: Organic crops are grown without the use of conventional pesticides or artificial fertilizers and are processed without food additives. This certainly isn’t a new concept; small family-owned farms have been selling crops such as these for years. However, organic foods in giant-sized supermarkets are a relatively new thing. As far as knowing if the food is worth the extra money, that is still up for debate. While some say organic food is safer (and even possibly more nutritious), others experts say there’s not enough evidence to prove it offers any real advantage.
