Amherst Parks & Rec schedules classes
The Amherst County Parks and Recreation Department will offer several classes. For more information call (434) 946-9371 unless otherwise noted.
Cheyenne’s Country and Western Line Dance Class, When: 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays for six weeks, beginning March 11. A free class will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26. Where: Coolwell Community Center. Cost: $30 per person or $50 for husband and wife.
Beginners Jewelry Making, When: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 through 25. Where: Former Amherst Baptist Church building. Cost: $20 per person. Supplies needed: Two pairs of needlenose pliers. Pre-registration required at least one week in advance.
Learn to Paint Acrylic Art Classes, When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays for six weeks, beginning March 6. Where: Coolwell Community Center. Cost: $15 per person plus $5 for supplies. Supplies needed: Roll of paper towels and newspapers. Wear old clothes. Call (434) 929-7707.
LC offers presentation on global warming
Charles Tooley will present “Climate Change: Increasingly Inconvenient,” a graphic depiction of Al Gore’s visual material on global warming at 7:30 p.m.
Monday, in Sydnor Performance Hall, Elliot & Rosel Schewel Hall, as part of Lynchburg College’s Year of the Environment. The event is free and open to the public.
Tooley was selected as one of the first 50 volunteers trained by Gore, scientists and staff to learn how to become a presenter of the information about global warming that Gore presents in the film “An Inconvenient Truth.”
Deadline nears for art grant applications
The Virginia Commission for the Arts has announced a 5 p.m. March 3, application deadline for the Commission’s 2008-09 General Operating Support for Arts Organizations, Services to the Field Grants and Project Grants for Organizations.
Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications can be downloaded at http://www.arts.virginia.gov. For more information call (804) 225-3132.
Academy sets auditions for ‘Guys and Dolls’
The Academy of Fine Arts will hold auditions for “Guys and Dolls” at 6 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday.
Auditions will take place in the Academy’s Arts and Education Building at Fifth and Commerce streets. Performances of “Guys and Dolls” are scheduled for May 2 through May 10.
Those auditioning should be prepared to sing 16 bars of a song not from the musical, and should be prepared to dance.
Audition scenes are available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Academy box office.
