Art history class scheduled
Westminster Canterbury will offer an art history class entitled “ArTalks 2008 Professor in Your Pocket: Your Guide to Selections from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.” The class will take place from 11 a.m. to noon Fridays, Feb. 15 through March 21, in the Commons.

Guitarist to perform solo
Internationally known guitarist Rafael Scarfullery will perform a solo recital of works by Spanish and Latin American composers at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19, in the Alice Ashley Jack Room at Randolph College. There is no admission charge.
Scarfullery is a classical guitarist, composer and conductor who has won several awards for his cultural projects, compositions and performaces. He has taught at several universities, organized six guitar festivals in the Dominican Republic and performed in Puerto Rico, Haiti, Turkey, Venezuela, the United States and Canada. Ball set in Bedford
The Bedford Community Health Foundation will host the Leap Day Bal Masque from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Feb. 29, at the Elks National Home in Bedford. The event will feature music, dancing and refreshments. Recipients of the Foundation’s Community Health Award will also be recognized.
Tickets are $25 per person. Proceeds from the event will go toward the Bedford Community Health Foundation’s projects. Masks and black tie are optional. For more information or to purchase tickets call (540) 586-5292.
‘Thought Leader’ to speak
Rob Lebow will present a Richard P. Gifford Lecture, “Where Have All the Heroes Gone: Eight Steps to Creating a Heroic Environment,” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18, in the Memorial Ballroom, Hall Campus Center at Lynchburg College. A reception and book signing will follow.
Lebow was named “One of the Top 100 Thought Leaders in the World” by Leadership Excellence Magazine in 2005. During the past 22 years, his international organization has worked with more than 300 clients worldwide and was ranked one of the Top 10 Best Leadership Development Organizations in America in 2005 and 2006. Lebow is also the author of “A Journey Into the Heroic Environment.”

Riverviews features writer
Riverviews ArtSpace’s Third Thursday continues Feb. 21 with writer Steve Faulkner.
The literary lounge event with the author of “Waterwalk: A Passage of Ghosts” is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Riverviews, Jefferson and Ninth streets.
“Waterwalk,” Faulker’s latest book, tells the tale of a father-son canoe trip of epic proportions and endless implications. He will read from his work at Third Thursday.
Faulkner, who spent part of his childhood on the savannahs of Africa, earned a bachelor’s, a master’s, and a Ph.D from the University of Kansas. He now teaches creative writing at Longwood University.

Bluegrass series continues
Nothin’ Fancy is scheduled to take the stage with The Bluegrass Brothers at 2 p.m. at Appomattox County High School as part of the Appomattox Bluegrass Concert Series.
