CVCC to ‘Imagine Mexico’
The Merritt Hall Gallery of Central Virginia Community College will display “Imagining Mexico,” an exhibit inspired by various locations in Mexico, through February. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

The exhibit features paintings by Kelly Mattox and Patsy Wilkerson; photographs and drawings by Doni Guggenheimer; and photographs by Sammy Allen, Kathy Cudlin, Jill Markwood, Ginny Schmidt and Melinda Wheeler.

The images all originate in various locations in Mexico, including San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, the Riviera Maya region, Oaxaca, Tijuana and Mexico City.

Symphony schedules free show
The Lynchburg College Wind Symphony, Orchestra and Jazz Band will present “A Night at the Movies” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14, in Sydnor Performance Hall, Elliot & Rosel Schewel Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Complimentary tickets are available through the music office by calling (434) 544-8344.

The Wind Symphony and Orchestra performace will feature music from movie favorites such as the Harry Potter movies, “The Patriot,” “Henry V,” “Schindler’s List” and “The Mission.”

The Jazz Band will play “Soul Bossa Nova” by Quincy Jones, in addition to music from “The Incredibles.”

LSYO holding auditions
The Lynchburg Symphony Youth Orchestra has openings for the oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet and percussion. Rehearsals are held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, at Court Street United Methodist Church. Lecture looks at evolution
John F. Haught will present a lecture on “Evolution and Faith: What is at Stake?” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8, in Snidow Chapel at Lynchburg College. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information call (434) 544-8609.

Haught, senior fellow of science and religion at Woodstock Theological Center, Georgetown University, lectures internationally and is especially interested in science, cosmology, evolution, ecology and religion. He testified for the plaintiffs in the recent “intelligent design” trial in Kitzmiller et al. vs. Dover Board of Education in Dover, Penn. Haught is also the author of more than a dozen books.

Exhibition opens at Artifacts
Artist Rodney Laughon’s work is one dispay at Artifacts in Peakland Crossing.

A reception has been scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8.

A self-taught painter, Laughon began working in watercolors and now works mostly in oils. He paints landscapes principally landscapes, whether in the Blue Ridge Mountains or out west.

Writer to read at LC lounge
Carolyne Wright, Thornton Writer-in-Residence at Lynchburg College, will give a reading at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Alumni House Lounge.

A book signing and reception will follow the reading, sponsored by the Richard H. Thornton Endowment in English.

Wright’s most recent book is “A Change of Maps” (Lost Horse Press, 2006), a Los Angeles Times Book Awards nominee and winner of the 2007 Independent Book Publishers Poetry Bronze Award.

Riverviews screens ‘Talk to Me’
“Talk to Me” will be screened as the Second Saturdays feature this month at Riverviews ArtSpace.

The film, directed by Kasi Lemmons and starring Don Cheadle, is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. This R-rated film, set in Washington, D.C., during the late 1960s, tells the real-life story of DJ Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr.

ZOOperstars invade LU games
ZOOperstars, a troupe of inflatable mascots, will provide the half-time entertainment with skits and dances at the Liberty University men’s and women’s basketball games on Saturday.
