Academy presents ‘In the Mood’ on Friday
A 1940s musical revue is coming to the Academy of Fine Arts this weekend.

“In the Mood,” scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday in the Warehouse Theatre, takes a retro look at America’s greatest generation with music and dance that combine up-tempo big band rhythms with mellow, intimate ballads. The revue features singers, dancers and the String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra.

The Academy show will be the first performance of “In the Mood’s” 2008-2009 national tour.

Tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors and $13 for students. They can be purchased at the Academy’s box office or online at http://www.AcademyFineArts.com.

CVCC opens new photography exhibit
Central Virignia Community College will open a new photography exhibition, “Close to Home,” at the Merritt Hall Gallery on Friday, featuring the work of Barbara Hartley and Jill Markwood. The opening reception will take place on Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Second Saturday begins at Riverviews
Riverviews Artspace will kick of its Second Saturday film series with a screeing of “The Violin,” a story of a family caught in the political uprisings of 1970s Meixco, on Oct. 13 at 8 p.m.

The story, set in rural Mexico, follows the tribulations of a family of musians and farmers caught up in the peasant guerilla movement’s efforts against an oppressive government. The film received acclaim at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, and six Ariel Awards, Mexico’s equivalent to the Academy Awards.

Sweet Briar musician to give concert in Russian
Anna Billias, vocalist and piano accompanist for Sweet Briar College’s music program, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Memorial Chapel. Admission is free. She will be joined by her 8-year-old daughter, Yelena, who will also sing and play piano. All songs will be sung in Russian. For more information call (434) 381-6115.
