Music festival, competition slated at Academy of Fine Arts
Forte Chamber Music will present the third Gustavo Romero Music Festival and Piano Competition at the Academy of Fine Arts on Aug. 29 and 30. The music will begin with a gala concert and dinner on Aug. 29 with a concert by Romero of Gershwin and Rachmaninoff selections.

The event will continue at 10 a.m. Aug. 30 with the Young Artists Piano Competition featuring finalists Christopher Hill, Max Hou, Kristina Hu, David Wang and Lyric Yu. The winner will earn a $1,000 prize and play for the Saturday night audience. Following the competition there will be an afternoon concert called Children of All Ages at 3 p.m. The festival will conclude at 7:30 p.m. with Music for a Summer Evening.

Ticket prices are as follows: Gustavo Romero Plays Gershwin and Rachmaninoff, $125; Young Artists Piano Competition, $5; Children of All Ages, $20 for adults, $11 for children; Music for a Summer Evening, $35, champagne intermission included; Festival Weekend Pass which offers admission to all events, $165. Summer Concert Series wraps at First Baptist Church Aug. 24
The final program in the Summer Concert Series at First Baptist Church is set for Aug. 24.

The concert, which begins at 3 p.m. in the downtown Lynchburg church, will feature The Garber Girls, a vocal quartet; Abby Fairchild, French horn and piano; Anna Fairchild, oboe; Sami Natour, cello; Matthew Booth, pipe organ; Logan Troyer, vocalist; and Jeremy Witt, vocalist.

The concert is free, although donations will be accepted for the Timothy Program sponsored by Churches for Urban Ministries. For more information, call (434) 846-1345.

Gretna Little Theatre to hold auditions for two productions
The Gretna Little Theatre will hold auditions for the remaining two productions of the 2008 season from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 2, at First Baptist Church of Gretna.

This is an open audition for all ages. The October production will be “Curse You, Jack Dalton” and will be presented Oct. 17 through 19. Reading from the script will be sufficient for the audition.

The holiday production “Broadway Showcase” will be presented Nov. 28 through 30. Applicants should prepare a Broadway song from any musical and they should bring sheet music for the accompanist. Soloists, duets, trios, quartettes and chorus members are needed. There is also a particular need for children to be included in the holiday show. Dancers should be prepared to learn a short and simple dance routine prepared by theatre choreographers. Instrumentalists are also needed. For more information call (434) 228-1778.

Treble Tapestry holding auditions for fall season
Treble Tapestry, a women’s vocal ensemble, will hold auditions for the Fall 2008 season beginning at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 27 through 29. For information on membership or the audition process contact Jane Montgomery at (434) 384-0754 or .

Grace Restaurant hosts art show, outdoor concert
On Aug. 27, Grace will hold a 5 p.m. reception for its latest show, called “Rooftops to Roadsides.“ It features the work of artist David Eakin and photographer Lisa Pitcher and will stay up through October.
The Skyler McCurley Band will play from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the lawn in front of the house-turned-restaurant at 2627 Old Forest Road, Lynchburg. (Some tables will be set up outside, but guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets.)

Box dinners will be available for $10, starting at 6 p.m., along with beverages.

LSO season subscriptions on sale through office
The Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra is offering season subscriptions for all three of their orchestral concerts for $55. The concerts will be held Sept. 6, March 21 and May 10. Subscribers are also entitled to discounts and early reservations for other shows. Subscriptions can be obtained by calling the LSO office at (434) 845-6604.

Vines Restaurant donates to VSA
Vines Restaurant will support the Virginia School of the Arts by donating 15 percent of dinner and beverage sales from 6 to 9 p.m. every Thursday in September. Mention VSA at the restaurant ito participate.

Sedalia festival to feature jazz singer
Jazz singer Stephanie Nakasian will headline the first annual Jazz & Wine Festival Aug. 23 at the Sedalia Center in Big Island.

Nakasian, who lives in Charlottesville, has received international acclaim, including recognition by the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz as one of the world’s leading jazz singers. Her jazz style is compared to those of Ella Fitzgerald, June Christy and Rosemary Clooney.

Gus Miller will open the festival, followed by Lenny Marcus, a jazz musician from Roanoke.

Virginia wineries will offer wine tastings, and vendors will sell seafood and other fare.
