Volunteers to paint 800 square-foot mural
For 12 weeks this summer, volunteers from Lynchburg and the surrounding counties, including over 140 middle and high school student artists, will participate in Amazement Square’s CityArts Mentoring Program to complete an 800 square foot section of the mural that details the history of the Monacan Indians.

The program allows youth to play an important role in creating outdoor public art. The completed project will detail the history of Lynchburg along the James River. The 4, 800 square foot mosaic will be one of the largest in the Commonwealth. Mosaic artist Beryl Solla traveled from Charlottesville to teach student volunteers the technique of tiling.

The program is offered at no cost to students and is made possible in part by the Virginia Commision for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Centra, The News & Advance, Sonny Merryman Inc., The Babcock & Wilcox Company, Watts Petroleum Corp. and the City of Lynchburg.

Individuals are encouraged to make a contribution to the Buy A Tile, Build A Dream campaign. Raised funds will be used to purchase the remaining tiles required to complete the mural.
