Funds will restore music theatre
The Academy of Fine Arts will receive $250,000 from the federal government as part of the Omnibus Appropriations Act. The funds will be used in the restoration of the 1905 Academy of Music Theatre as part of the ongoing Cornerstone Campaign. They are designated for the construction of the Academy of Music stage house and fly tower, both of which were destroyed by a windstorm in June 1993.

Auditions open for theatre production
Lynchburg’s Parks and Recreation Department will hold open auditions for Follystick Theatre’s “A Night of Theatre.” The night will feature two one act plays, a comedy called “Shakespeare to Go” and a tragedy called “The Girl in the Mirror.”

Pianist schedules solo recital for Saturday
Pianist Emily Yap Chua will give a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, in the Wimberly Recital Hall. The program of all French music will feature works by Ravel, Debussy, Chaminade and Chopin.

Chua made her international solo debut on Dec. 30, at The Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila. Other performances of this recital tour include appearances at Mary Baldwin College, the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and the national convention of the Phi Beta Performing Arts Fraternity. Chua is an assistant professor of music at Randolph College, where she has taught since 2002.

Art club sets roster of winter classes
The Lynchburg Art Club has scheduled its winter 2008 art classes, which will begin next week.

Classes, which run eight weeks unless otherwise stated, meet at the club at 1011 Rivermont Ave. All interested students should call teachers immediately to register.

Independent work time with Marion Freerks (434-384-8472). Students work on their own in a workshop/studio environment. No skill level required. Classes: Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to noon, beginning Jan. 21. Tuition: $20.

Pastel painting with Christine Rooney (434-384-0188). Beginning and intermediate students use and experiment with a variety of pastels, papers and combinations of different mediums, with demonstrations and tutorials of various techniques. Classes: Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., beginning Jan. 23. Tuition: $100.

Advanced pastel painting with Christine Rooney (434-384-0188). This class involves intensive work with pastels, with emphasis on composition and creativity. Classes: Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning Jan. 23. Tuition: $100.

Advanced watercolor with Solly Blank (434-385-9742). Students will work from photographs for advanced watercolor painting, aided by demonstrations and critiques. Classes: Mondays from 1 to 3:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 21. Tuition: $125.

Artist to offer additional class
Due to full enrollment in Beginning in Watercolor class with artist Karen Bowden, the Academy of Fine Arts will offer another section. Need-based scholarships are available, thanks to Genworth Financial. Advance registration is required. Exhibition of former VCU professor at SBC
An exhibition of the work of artist Myron Helfgott is scheduled to open Friday, Jan. 18, at Sweet Briar College’s Babcock Gallery.

Helfgott’s sculptures includes “Tyranny of the Theoretical” and “A Conversation with Max Frisch.” A half-dozen drawings will hang in the gallery entry.

The show is scheduled to run through March 31, with a reception with the artist, who taught at Virginia Commonwealth University, scheduled for 4:30 to 6 p.m. on March 28.

Art gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Friday, and 1 to 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. For information, please call (434) 381-6248.
