Amherst Parks/ Rec sets offerings

Chinqua Penn Plantation

What: A 27-room American castle built in the 1920s. Trip will include a tour of the house and gardens, and a wine tasting. Cost: $58.

Luncheon Cruise
Where: Washington D.C.
When: July 8.
What: A luncheon cruise on the “Spirit of Washington.”

Author to lecture, sign books at SBC
Jean Kilbourne, author of “Can’t Buy Me Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel,” will present the lecture “Deadly Persuasion: Advertising and Addiction” at 7 p.m. Sunday, in Murchison Lane Auditorium, Sweet Briar College. Kilbourne will discuss how advertising affects decisions to smoke and drink alcohol, as well as how it relates to body image. A book signing will follow.

Little Theatre to hold auditions
The Gretna Little Theatre will hold auditions for the summer musical “The Merry Widow,” from 7 to 9 p.m. April 15 and 17, at First Baptist Church, Gretna.
Auditionees should prepare a Broadway show tune or they may select a number from music that will be available. A personal pianist may accompany the audition. Major roles are available for men and women, as well as parts for choruses.
The theatre is also recruiting accompanists on a rotating schedule for the eight weeks of rehearsal. Interested pianists should attend the audition. For more information call (434) 228-1778.
Forest celebrates Jefferson birthday
Thomas Jefferson’s 265th birthday will be celebrated at Poplar Forest with a concert on Sunday, April 13.
The Léya String Quartet from Montréal will perform at 2:30 p.m. in the concert in memory of former Poplar Forest board member, Allen E. Womack.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth. For tickets and information, call (434) 534-8120.
Other birthday activities include a talk and ceremonial planting by The American Chestnut Foundation at 12:30 p.m.
Ensembles join up for local shows
Treble Tapestry, a Lynchburg women’s vocal ensemble, and Riddle on the Harp, a Bedford-based Celtic music band, along with other Celtic music instrumentalists, will join forces for two upcoming concerts.
The first show will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, in Snidow Chapel at Lynchburg College. The second is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the Bedford Academy for the Arts on North Bridge Street.

Riverviews to screen indie film
“Arranged,” an independent film that explores the similarities of two different women who are both going through arranged marriages, will be shown at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Riverviews Artspace.
The film is Riverviews Second Saturday offering.
Two young women - one an Orthodox Jew, the other Muslim - become friends as first-year teachers at a public school in Brooklyn. They learn they share much in common, not least of which is that they are both going through arranged
marriages.
“Arranged” is based loosely on the experiences of Yuta Silverman, an Orthodox Jewish woman from Brooklyn.
