CVCC hosts ‘A Sojourn in Spain’
“A Sojourn in Spain,” an exhibition of photographs and paintings, will open at Central Virginia Community College’s Merritt Hall Gallery on Friday.
The work reflects a journey by seven individuals through Spain, from Picasso’s birthplace in Malaga to Grenada, Seville, Toledo, Madrid and the legendary region of La Mancha.
Images range from flamenco performances by gypsy dancers in caves to the intricate architectural design of the Alhambra.
The artists are Linda Rodriguez, Jill Markwood, Anne Stagg, William Stagg, Frank Poynter, Lorenz Chan, Kathly Cudlin and Justin Crank.
An opening reception is scheduled from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, and the exhibit will stay up through the end of December.
Piano concert at RC
Randolph College pianist Emily Yap Chua and Sweet Briar College’s Nick Ross will perform “The Piano Music of Kent Holliday” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in Sweet Briar’s Memorial Chapel and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 20 in Randolph’s Wimberly Recital Hall in Presser Hall.
Academy work on sale
Instructors and students in the pottery program at the Academy of Fine Arts will be offering pottery, fused glass and jewelry in the annual holiday sale. The sale will take place in the Art Studio in the Arts and Education building, Commerce and 5th streets from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday; 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday. America’ at Firehouse
The Firehouse, 1210 Rivermont Ave., will host “America: Film and Author Series” throughout November. All events are free and open to the public.
Sunday: Ingenuity
—“Pull My Daisy,” by Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac, 7 p.m. A short film that typifies the Beat Generation.
—“Scratch,” by Doug Pray, 8 p.m. Documentary about hip-hop DJing.
Nov. 19: Dissent
—“Dissent: Voices of Conscience,” by Colonel (Ret.) Ann Wright, 7 p.m. “Dissent” tells the true stories of government insiders and active-duty military personnel who spoke out in protest of government actions they felt were illegal.
—“Body of War,” by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro, 8 p.m. Documentary of an injured American veteran returning home from the war in Iraq.
Nov. 23: Class
—“Flag Wars,” by Linda Good Bryant, 7 p.m. Documentary that follows the conflicts that arise when gay white professionals move into a black working-class neighborhood.
Nov. 30: Space
—“Thinking Out Loud: Buckminster Fuller,” by K. Goodman and K. Simon, 7 p.m. Documentary about the life of Buckminster Fuller.
Art on display at Timbrook
Native Virginia artist John Moon recently presented an original work, “On Wings of Words,” as a contribution towards the Timberlake Community Complex Capital Campaign. The work is currently on display at Timbrook Library on Timberlake Road. A reception will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Timbrook Library.
Choral society tickets on sale
Jefferson Choral Society season tickets are now on sale for the chorus’ 19th season. Tickets are $50 for individuals and $100 for families. LC hosts ‘Global Gala’
Lynchburg College will host “Step Out and Serve: A Global Gala” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Ballroom, Hall Campus Center. Admission is $25 per person; $10 for students.
Semi-formal attire is recommended. All proceeds will provide humanitarian relief to the college’s partner countries. For more information call (434) 544-8348.
The event will feature exhibits, service opportunities, a fundraising pledge drive, Fair Trade items, music and drumming. Rachael Tanner, who lived and worked in Haiti for more than a year, will give the keynote address. There will also be hors d’oeuvres of native foods from Kenya, Uganda and Haiti.
Poetry deadline Dec. 1
The Maier Museum of Art is accepting submissions for the “Water Lines” Poetry Contest. Poets of all ages are encouraged to submit work that refers or responds to an artwork in the exhibition “Water Marks.” Deadline for submissions is Dec. 1. Poems will be considered for possible inclusion in a publication entitled “Water Lines: Poems Inspired by the Water Marks Exhibition at the Maier Museum of Art.” For more information call (434) 947-8136.
Fall concert in Bedford
The Bedford Community Orchestra will play its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bedford Middle School Auditorium. There is a suggested donation of $10 per person. The featured performance, “Mississippi Suite,” will celebrate the Mississippi River’s natural, mythic and cultural origins. Quartet at Academy
The Academy of Fine Arts will host “An Intimate Evening with the Paddy D Quartet” at 8 p.m. Nov. 22 in the Joy & Lynch Christian Warehouse Theatre. Admission is $20 per person.
