On Saturday, Laura Light and the Avant Gardeners will hit the stage, also at 7:30 p.m. The band — vocalist and fiddler Light; George Paul on piano and accordion, Dave Wiesler on keyboards, guitar and mandolin; and Jubal Creech on percussion — perform everything from traditional swing to Celtic tunes, with lots of improvisation.

Poplar Forest welcomes author
Martin Clagett will be signing copies of his book, “Scientific Jefferson: Revealed,” in the Poplar Forest Museum Shop from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The book explores how science shaped Jefferson’s views on politics, religion, economics and social developments in America. Among other accomplishments, Jefferson advocated the study and practice of agriculture as a science, introduced new and useful plants and livestock into the country and developed the scientific method of stratification, which is the foundation for modern archaeological techniques.

Clagett also describes his work in anthropology, ethnology, linguistics, paleontology and medicine.

For more information, call (434) 534-8116.
