Lynchburg parks/
rec plans classes
The Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department will offer art classes in Beginning Hand Built and Wheel Pottery, Tips and Tricks for Oil Painters, Pastels and Watercolors through April and May. Participants may register at the Miller Center, 301 Grove St., between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call (434) 455-5866 or (434) 455-5865.
Riverviews hosts writer tonight
Writer Kevin McFadden will read his work at 7:30 tonight at Riverviews Artspace.
McFadden is the author of “Hardscrabble,” an inaugural selection in the VQR Poetry Series. His poems have appeared in Poetry, Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, The Southern Review, The Antioch Review, Denver Quarterly, The Iowa Review, Shenandoah and other publications. His essays and critical work have appeared in Quarterly West, The Hollins Critic, The Virginia Quarterly Review and Agni Online. The Charlottesville resident currently serves as associate program director of the Virginia Festival of the Book.

Sweet Briar plans Spring Fling ’08
Sweet Briar College will present “Spring Fling 2008: Where the Stars Come to Play,” Friday and Saturday. Events will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, in the Quad with laser tag, water slides a climbing wall and music by country singer Natalie Stovall.
The activites will continue at 9 p.m. Saturday, in Prothro Dining Room. The evening will feature a trio of concerts, casino games and other activities. Charlottesville band Sparky’s Flaw will play, along with Australian singer/songwriter Ben Lee and headliner Matt Nathanson. Snacks will be provided. New venue to hold grand opening
The Pit, a new music venue at 1417 Kemper St., will have a grand opening concert Saturday. War Without Reason, Noob Saibot, Krayola Carnage, Gomorah and I Am the Messenger will all perform. Opera on the James production sold out
The April 18 and 20 performances of Opera on the James’ “La Boheme” are sold out. Patrons who cannot use their tickets are requested to notify the box office at (434) 528-3397.
