Heritage to perform ‘Suburb, the Musical’The latest from Heritage High School’s Pioneer Theatre is a dinner theater production of “Suburb, the Musical,” which explores all the suburb’s rites and rituals. The story is interwoven with musical reveries on subjects like mowing the lawn, shopping and grilling up the perfect meal.
Performances are at 7 p.m. April 10, 11 and 12, and 2 p.m. April 13. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased by 4 p.m. on the day of the chosen performance. For the Sunday matinee, tickets must be bought by 4 p.m. Saturday. Ticket outlets are the Heritage main office, Robertson Drug Company on Fort Avenue and Givens Books/Little Dickens on Lakeside Drive.
Authors to sign works in area on Saturday
Virginia Beach-based author Joe Jackson will be at Givens Books from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 5, to sign copies of his book, “Thief at the End of the World: Rubber, Power and the Seeds of Empire.” It’s a story about one of the world’s first “bio-pirates,” Englishman Henry Wickham, who smuggled 70,000 rubber plant seeds out of the Amazon in the the 1870s.
Also, Alan Pell Crawford, author of the latest book on Thomas Jefferson, “Twilight at Monticello: the Final Years of Thomas Jefferson,” will be at Poplar Forest from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5.
Nominations open for Governor’s art awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Governor’s Awards for the Arts 2008. The awards recognize outstanding lifetime achievement by Virginia artists, arts organizations and those who support and encourage the arts.
