Amy Winehouse to perform at fourth annual Woodie Awards

By Mark Bailey on Oct. 24, 2007

—Amy Winehouse, who has been in and out of the headlines in recent months, will perform at the 2007 mtvU Woodie Awards in New York next month.
The British diva pulled out of MTV’s Video Music Awards, which were held in Las Vegas on Sept. 9. Her U.S. record label, Universal Republic Records, said all U.S. appearances had been canceled “in a continued effort to support Amy Winehouse’s well-being.”
In August, Winehouse canceled a series of British concerts and put her North American tour on hold. The 24-year-old retro-soul singer had been dogged by concerns over her health and reports of drug use.
The fourth annual mtvU Woodie Awards will be presented Nov. 8 at the Roseland Ballroom. They will air Nov. 15 on mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, and its Web site.
Nominees include The Shins, Lily Allen, The Academy Is…, Justice, Gym Class Heroes, Modest Mouse, Lil Wayne, Linkin Park and TV on the Radio. Winehouse is among the nominees for Woodie of the Year.
Votes are cast on the network’s Web site and by texting.
Spank Rock and The Academy Is… are also scheduled to perform, mtvU announced Thursday.
—Led Zeppelin’s digital “Communication Breakdown” ends Nov. 13.
The classic-rock group, one of the last major holdouts against digital distribution of its music, is making its catalog available online to coincide with the release that day of a new two-disc compilation from Rhino Records, “Mothership.”
The announcement comes amid a flurry of Led Zeppelin activity, which will culminate with a Nov. 26 reunion concert at London’s O2 Arena to honor the late Atlantic Records founder, Ahmet Ertegun.
Led Zeppelin’s eight original albums will be made available to all major download retailers, as will the live collections “The Song Remains the Same” and “How the West Was Won.” The deal leaves the Beatles as the last major act not to have its catalog available digitally.
—Nirvana’s 1993 “MTV Unplugged” outing makes its DVD debut Nov. 20. The set, recorded in New York, was released on CD in 1994. The DVD includes four songs from sound-check and behind-the-scenes footage.
