All about the groove

The guys in local band Bubbahoffa have been playing music together for a long time.
The four-piece (Mike Riley, guitar/vocals; Shane Tyree, guitar/vocals; Paul Routon, bass/vocals; and Dave Hanowitz, drums) have been friends for nearly 15 years. Each having toured with bands such as .38 Special, The Charlie Daniels Band and L.A. Guns, they fully settled into Bubbahoffa around 2005.
Their sound blends different interests and backgrounds, mixing up a recipe of rock to include reggae, blues and folk.
“We’re four of the most eclectic guys playing music in Lynchburg,” Routon says.
While they enjoy playing a crowd favorite every now and then, Bubbahoffa’s setlist is made up primarily of original songs.
“I’ve played in 10 to 11 bands that were strictly cover bands,” says Hanowitz. “I like being in a band where I can jam. ... It’s all about the groove.”
“We like to play the songs you wish (you’d) heard in the last 10 years,” adds Riley.
And it’s not rare for guests to be randomly added to the line-up, as the band often invites musicians from the audience to join in for a good jam.
“By the third set, the energy transforms, and there will be experimental stuff mixed in,” Tyree says.
The guys in Bubbahoffa come from different inspirational backgrounds to create a sound that just works.
If you’re looking to relax and have a good time in Lynchburg this Friday, Bubbahoffa’s playing at 8 p.m. Jazz Street. Just please don’t yell “Freebird” during the show.
