2+2 = Honeydew

By Liz Barry on May. 22, 2008

The Honey Dewdrops, a singer-songwriter duo from Scottsville, will perform at The White Hart Coffee Shop on Main Street, May 24.

Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish are the force behind the Honey Dewdrops, which features a minimalist set up: two voices and two guitars.

The duo gained national recognition in March on the popular radio show, “A Prairie Home Companion,” hosted by the iconic Garrison Keillor. They snagged first place in a “talent show for twenty-something troubadours” out of more than 1,000 entrants, taking home the coveted Wobegon Idol, a silver water tower trophy.

Their music, recognized for its tight harmonies and meaningful lyrics, echoes traditional American folk styles while incorporating the modern sounds of country and rock music.

“We’re pretty interested in the brother/sister duet, which has a long history. . . . It’s kind of simple with just two instruments and just two voices, but you can do a lot within those boundaries,” says Parrish.

Wortman and Parrish, who met playing in a rock band during college, describe their intimate performance style in their bio: “We feel like two old friends playing in your living room.”

After living together in Richmond for two years, the couple lives on a big farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wortman is a teacher’s assistant at Scottsville Elementary and Parrish is a special education teacher at Charlottesville High School. They are engaged to be married.

Wortman and Parrish are putting the finishing touches on their first EP, which will go on sale on their Myspace page. They also hope to record more songs soon and play more gigs, with hopes of eventually making a living through music.

--The White Hart show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $5. For more information about the Honey Dewdrops, visit http://www.myspace.com/thehoneydewdrops.
